Vehicle Wraps: 5 Myths and Truths

Vehicle wraps are easily one of the most popular and cost-efficient marketing tools for any business. However, these wraps are digitally printed and are fairly new to the market, which is why there are still those who believe the myths that these wraps can cause harm to your vehicle’s paint job.

Myth 1

You Cannot Wrap a Leased Vehicle

Wrapping leased vehicles is a common practice.  Many companies lease their business or fleet vehicles. In fact, some clients have their dealer deliver newly leased vehicles directly to wrapping studios.  In general, most leased vehicles are delivered with factory paint jobs. Vinyl applied over factory paint can be easily removed without damage.   Leased vehicles are wrapped across the country every day without incident or damage.

Myth 2

A Vehicle Wrap Will Damage Your Paint

To the contrary, a vehicle wrap can actually protect your paint.  If the paint is fully cured and in good condition, a vehicle wrap will prevent exposure to UV rays, abrasions from dirt, particles, and resins, and other environmental elements.  

Your vehicles are valuable company assets and protecting them from damage is an important responsibility.  So be sure your vehicle wrap company performs a pre-wrap inspection of your vehicle.  During this inspection, they will note any areas where the paint is damaged or compromised.  Removal of digital graphics from these areas may further damage paint. Know where these areas are in advance so you can make an informed decision with no surprises down the road when it is time for removal.

Myth 4

It is Unsafe to Put Graphics on Vehicle Windows

You can see through window graphics that are printed on perforated window film. Window vinyl is perforated with very small holes that allow you to see just as much as an uncovered window. For safety reasons, however, the front windshield and both the driver and passenger windows should not have vinyl graphics. Normally the rear windshield and rear windows on passenger and driver side doors can be covered.  

The more vertical the window, the better your visibility will be through perforated window film.  Low-angle rear windows, like those on many Prius models, are not good candidates for window graphics.

To maintain that clear visibility, make sure your graphics company uses an “optically clear” over laminate.  It’s more expensive than laminates used for the graphics on the rest of your vehicle but far less expensive than the cost of an accident due to diminished visibility.

Myth 5

Vehicle Wraps are Expensive and Not Worth the Investment

This may vary depending on the individual type of business and vehicle usage. It a common opinion for car wraps companies to tell you that a great vehicle wrap is financially efficient compared to a traditional paid advertising. On a cost per impressions basis, vehicle wraps always win over traditional paid media like radio, print, billboards, and television – because you have no on-going media costs once your vehicle is wrapped.  You don’t have to pay for airtime or ad space because your vehicle is delivering your message for you.  This is a huge contributor to a wrap’s economic value.
